Mental disorders affect a staggering quarter of the global population during their lifetimes, with depression ranking among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Mental health issues account for 16% of the global burden of disease among individuals aged 10-19, often beginning early and frequently going untreated. Tragically, suicide claims the lives of nearly 800,000 individuals annually, emerging as the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally.
Despite the prevalence and severity of these challenges, stigma and discrimination continue to hinder access to vital mental health support. Moreover, the economic toll of mental health conditions is immense, costing trillions of dollars globally due to lost productivity and healthcare expenses. The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have exacerbated these issues, fuelling heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and loneliness. However, the rise of digital mental health resources, such as online therapy and mobile applications, has greatly expanded access to support, offering a lifeline for many.
Encouragingly, prioritizing a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, and strong social connections can significantly promote mental well-being and aid in both prevention and management of mental health conditions. Early intervention remains crucial in averting long-term challenges, underscoring the importance of proactive mental health care.
