Two great articles from Dr. Kat Lindley

✍Medicare for All Is Not the Answer

    “I’m a physician, and I’m a patient. I’m against Medicare for All.

That’s not because I think our current system works. It doesn’t. I left it in 2017. I’ve watched families pay more every year for insurance and still face deductibles, copays, prior authorizations, and a rushed visit with a doctor who’s staring at a screen. They aren’t paying for care. They’re paying for the middlemen.

But the fix for too many middlemen isn’t one giant middleman. Putting one payer in charge doesn’t fix medicine. It gives you one bureaucracy instead of many, plus waiting lists.”

    ✍Coverage Isn’t Care

“If you like your health care plan, you can keep it.”

“Millions of Americans heard that promise and believed it. Then the cancellation letters came. PolitiFact named it the Lie of the Year in 2013, and the trust it cost has never really come back.

Now a new message is going viral: let’s finish what we started and guarantee healthcare for every American. I understand why that speaks to people. I have sat across from patients who were scared, sick, and unsure how they would pay. Every American deserves good care. On that, we agree.

Where we disagree is on what got us here and what will get us out.”

I’ve been reading Rory Sutherland’s book Alchemy, and he suggests that before we rush to find a solution, we need to make sure we’ve identified the real problem.

And I think that’s exactly the question Dr Kat Lindley raises in her two latest articles about healthcare reform.

We seem to spend an enormous amount of time arguing about who should pay for healthcare, but perhaps we should be asking a different question:

Why has it become so difficult and expensive for patients to get the care they actually need?
