I don’t enjoy a lukewarm drink, if I have hot coffee I prefer it hot.

New research looking at more than 450,000 people found that regularly drinking hot or very hot beverages was associated with a higher risk of one type of oesophageal cancer.

So perhaps I need to rethink just how hot “hot” needs to be.

Are you a hot or cool beverage drinker?

Other than soup being moderately warm, I prefer my beverage of choice water to be very cold. Plant milks and other fruit and vegetable juices moderately cold. Teas usually start out hot but my drinking range runs from warm to very cold. I usually burn my tongue on anything hot and regret drinking it too soon. So I’m thinking I am probably safe on this one.

I also prefer drinking tea or coffee while it is hot. I don’t see how the researchers could have gotten reliable results, because I bet as many hot beverage drinkers know now to drink hot drinks as well as those who don’t! They learn early in their experience to smartly sip the hot drink in a special way, by discreetly slurping it to mix it with air in a way that cools it down below harmful levels. So, the net effect is a safe and comforting warmth to the lips and throat as well as to the hands – so delightful, especially in the winter!
