Could Ivermectin Help Reduce Alcohol Cravings?
I really enjoyed this week’s show with Dr. Varon, where he presented the full scope of ivermectin’s story.
One area he touched on, that I had not encountered before, was the research into ivermectin and alcohol use disorder. Alcoholism has devastated so many families, so the possibility that a well-known drug could one day help reduce cravings is incredibly compelling.
Early research suggests ivermectin may bind with alcohol-related receptor pathways, including P2X4 receptors, and pilot work has explored whether it may reduce alcohol craving and alcohol’s reinforcing effects. This is still emerging science, but it is exactly the kind of hopeful, outside-the-box research worth following.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if new answers could help families struggling with alcohol addiction?
