Today, both Dr. Talley Bowden and Dr. Mollie James shared comments that CVS Pharmacy offers financial incentives to staff who are “certified immunizers” for administering vaccines.
Whether you support vaccination or not, this raises an important question:
Should healthcare recommendations ever be influenced by financial incentives?

It seems healthcare recommendations are nearly always influenced by financial incentives.

It seems that way …. I think one reason this has happened is that so many parts of healthcare have been consolidated under large corporate and investment-owned organizations. We’ve seen it across hospitals, medical practices, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and other areas of healthcare. When the primary responsibility shifts toward shareholders and financial performance, it’s easy for the patient-doctor relationship to become secondary.
That’s one of the reasons I’m so encouraged that some of our IMA physicians are helping teach doctors how to establish and run independent private practices. Supporting physician independence is one of the best ways to strengthen the doctor-patient relationship and put patients back at the center of care.
