The Power of Touch
Dr. Varon’s Brownstone article this week reminded me of something I saw a few weeks ago at a festival in Spain.
There were fireworks going off, and a young girl on the autism spectrum was really struggling with the noise. She was crying and covering her ears. A policeman nearby noticed her, went over, and hugged her. He stayed with her and helped her feel safe.
I am a real softie and this simple act of kindness made me cry.
I thought about that while reading Dr. Joseph Varon’s article, Medicine Has Forgotten How to Touch the Patient.
Dr. Varon talks about something that seems to be disappearing from modern medicine: doctors observing, examining, listening to, and touching their patients. We have incredible technology, testing, imaging, electronic records, and now AI. These are useful tools, but they shouldn’t replace the relationship between a doctor and patient. (link in comments)
The policeman in Spain wasn’t providing medical care, of course, but the connection for me was very simple. He noticed someone was struggling and responded with kindness and human contact.
Have you experienced a moment when a doctor, nurse, caregiver, or even a stranger made a difference simply by showing kindness and being present?
