Protecting Our Brains?
I think most of us know someone who has been affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of cognitive decline. It’s heartbreaking, not just for the person experiencing it but for the families watching someone they love change. My friend who lost her mom to Alzheimer’s described it as a double death.
There is a growing focus on factors beyond genetics, including environment, lifestyle and even certain infections and their role in brain health, it may be bigger than we’ve previously appreciated?
In her latest IMA Academy lecture, Dr Suzanne Gazda, IMA Senior Fellow for Brain Health, explores some fascinating areas of research, including:
The potential links between Long COVID and neurodegenerative disease.
Environmental factors that may contribute to cognitive decline.
Lifestyle changes that could help protect brain health.
New blood-based biomarkers that may help detect Alzheimer’s earlier.
Emerging research into lithium and other potential treatments.
