At last, a president who is prepared to listen to, and react to the credible science from experts with no conflict of interests, perhaps not gone as far as some would like, but it’s a great start.

“This executive order is a big step toward restoring sanity in US childhood vaccines,” said @DrKatLindley, Director of the IMA Fellowship Program. “This move strengthens parental authority, personal autonomy, and individual consent, three fundamentals of good health care that have been sorely missing from government healthcare policy.”

A recent Just the News article looks at the American Medical Association’s strong opposition to changes in the vaccine schedule and asks readers to consider what may be driving that response.

The AMA says altering the longstanding schedule without what it considers sufficient scientific justification could put children at risk and undermine public confidence in vaccination.

But there is another way to look at what is happening.

The revised federal approach reduced the number of vaccines routinely recommended for every child and placed several into categories involving risk assessment or shared clinical decision-making between families and their healthcare providers.

For many of us who have spent the past several years arguing for informed consent and individualized medicine, that phrase ….shared clinical decision-making…. deserves attention.

Why should greater involvement by parents and physicians be regarded as a threat?

Is questioning the schedule the same as rejecting vaccines?

One of the problems with the vaccine debate has been the tendency to force people into two camps: either accept the existing schedule without question or be branded “anti-vaccine.”

Should any medical recommendation become effectively untouchable simply because an institution has supported it for a long time?

Science advances by continuously testing assumptions, examining new evidence and being willing to change course when warranted.
