Elderly with vertigo

on April 17, 2026 at 9:30 pm EDTHello,
My mother has bouts of vertigo over the last year. She has had many tests done. There is some hearing loss in one ear but other than that all tests are negative. They say that she does not have the loose crystals in the ear. She never had any COVID shots and hasn’t had any recent infections. She is about 80 years old and these spells can last for days. She’s currently in a spell that is causing a lot of discomfort. Please let me know if there is any resource that you advise, I’d appreciate it. Thank you.

Im sorry shes suffering with vertigo. Its very frightening and debilitating.
Im not a doctor.
However, have you considered:
Allergies?
Time of season?
Windows or doors open?
This happened to my Dad, living in Arizona. Mom opened the sliding door.
He started to get dizzy etc.
He took a Claritin and it went away.
She may have another type of allergy:
New laundry detergent? Perfume? Foods? Any new hand soap, shampoo, house cleaner, face cream, body cream?
Has she had a brain scan?
Keep seeking!
I pray youll find her an answer!

Possibly a few sessions of acupuncture or dry needling could help. Also possibly ginger root pills 1000mg every 8 hours for a total 3000mg in 24 hour period.

Just a thought….. has anyone mentioned Vestibular Nuritous. It is a nerve in the ear which connects to the brain. My husband suffered from this, they treat it by physio therapy exercises. Just a thought.

@effiesue – Helen got vertigo about 5 years back. It was really debitating for her. I found this same youtube video and helped her carefully through the process.
Even though you’ve been informed there are no crystals, maybe there actually are. And this really helped, even though it’s tough to work through.
Vertigo really is unbelievably debilitating, and scary too. Hope this helps, and if not helpful, hope your Mom and you find a solution.
And thanks for asking your question here. lots of helpful answers so far. Brilliant.

Hello,
My father had similar symptoms many years ago and was diagnosed with Meniere’s Disease. I don’t think he was adequately treated. He had severe and progressive hearing loss and acute bouts of vertigo even while driving. He had to pull off the road for safety.
Apparently in Meniere’s there is a build up of fluid in the inner ear which is one of the main causes of the vertigo and balance issues. You don’t want your mother to have fall and sustain an injury because of this. If your mother’s doctors can arrive at a proper diagnosis, she can be competently treated. I would expect an ENT specialist could figure this out. I hope you and your mother can get some answers.

Thank you all so much for the answers. I will ask her some more in-depth questions. You have given me a starting point to help her and I really appreciate it.

I am almost 70 and have occasional bouts of vertigo. My doctor told me I needed to be on statins as it was high BP causing it. Instead I made my own remedy, in a jar I put whole organic lemons sliced, chopped organic garlic, chopped organic ginger and covered it with organic honey. I turned the jar a couple of times a day and let it do its thing for a week. Then took 3 teaspoons twice a day. Within 3 days my symptoms had completely gone and my BP was back to normal. I very occasionally get it now and use whatever I have left from whenever I last made it. I have never been an med taker and as soon as my symptoms resolve I stop taking it. Over time it does become more runny but this does not affect it. I do not refrigerate it, it sits on the countertop in the kitchen, I do turn it every now and then. I have never took statins and never will. I am on no other meds.
I hope this helps your mum. It is a horrible feeling when it happens but this has worked well for me.

Hello and thank you for your answer. Could you give me more specifics like the amount you used to make this? How many lemons, garlic cloves, how many inches of ginger? Left the jar turning it couple times per week at room temperature or ?refrigerated ?. Sounds great and need to try it for blood pressure. Again Thank you !

Hello Martin, I don’t weigh or measure any of it. I used a large jar, so I could share the results with family, I used a large Mason jar and I bought what I thought would fill it in honey, I used a couple of lemons, decent sized piece of ginger about the size of my middle finger, a whole garlic and after each item was added I poured honey over it and added the next one. I missed an ingredient off previously if I can edit I will, I also added chopped onion, a whole one. I never refrigerate honey, it crystalises if it gets too cold I just leave it on the countertop. I have the same concoction on the countertop for months with no adverse reactions. I have made the same thing with added Turmeric, a teaspoon but that was for friends I don’t like Turmeric so I don’t add it to mine. My adult son has taken it in a mug with a shot of whiskey and hot water when he had a cold coming on and it never developed. Hope this helps.

My friend’s recent experience with her Vertigo was: by taking 10,000 IU of Vitamin D plus 2 x K2 daily, in just over 2 weeks, her Vertigo completely rectified. She found this protocol from Dr. Eric Berg on You Tube where he has a very good explanation on why that works for certain kinds of Vertigo.
Hopefully your mother’s case is the same as my friend’s.

Thanks for this, thought I would share a link to Dr. Berg’s article https://www.drberg.com/blog/the-1-vitamin-deficiency-behind-vertigo

Have observed almost universal improvement, and often resolution, after patients changing to natural, unprocessed salt and without limitations.

The genius of ragdoll hit is how well it balances being easy to learn and having a lot of detail. In standard fighting games, you have to remember a lot of complicated button combinations. In hit ragdoll, you have to focus on timing, positioning, and thinking strategically.

My 72 yr old husband had a hearing test this morning and will be seeing an ent for hearing loss, vertigo, and possible Meniere’s Disease (MD).
Rummaging around on the internet I found the homeopathic Ferrum Picricum 30C recommended. https://www.amazon.com/Boiron-FERRUM-PICRICUM-30C-MD/dp/B00IZKKQKG Interestingly he also has a tendency toward warts for which it is also helpful. Facebook post about it: https://www.facebook.com/groups/deafandhoh/posts/10159897735887309/
Also the main medication used for Meniere’s Disease is a semisynthetic rhutin derivative, capers are very high in that so he’ll give that a try. I also bought a caper plant to see if we can grow the buds ourselves. (I can’t find the article for this.)
Further research uncovered gemmotherapy which I’d never heard of. “The gemmotherapy Sorbus domestica’s inherent properties to regulate venous circulation and lymphatic drainage have been utilized in the European literature for the treatment of MD and the patients in this study.” Article: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10919166/ Canada Boiron carries it but can’t ship to the States. The American Boiron site doesn’t have it. So I purchased some from https://www.wellnessupplement.com/products/sorbus-domestica-125ml?_pos=1&_psq=sorbus&_ss=e&_v=1.0 I plan to try it also for poor circulation in my feet. It seems to follow similar logic to using fermented caper – the immature flower bud of the caper plant.
Peacehealth recommends the flavinoid hydroxyethylrutosides. https://www.peacehealth.org/medical-topics/id/hn-1236009
I’m thankful for IMA for helping us work together to take responsibility for our own health management and finding medical practitioners who will be part of our team.
