Did you see the opening remarks that Dr. Jay Bhattacharya made to the Senate Health Committee? It’s so worth a watch and only 5 minutes long (link below).

Do you agree with his goals, would you add anything?

    1. First, NIH research should focus on research that solves the American chronic disease crisis.

    2. Second, NIH-supported science should be replicable, reproducible, and generalizable.

    3. Third, if confirmed, I will establish a culture of respect for free speech in science and scientific dissent at the NIH.

    4. Fourth, the NIH must recommit to its mission to fund the most innovative biomedical research agenda possible, to improve American health.

    5. Fifth, the NIH must regulate risky research that has the possibility of causing a pandemic.

There is a very good chance that he will be confirmed based on Pres. Trump’s current track record for appointments. Hopefully this will give IMA a foothold into the culture of NIH and will be a basis for a partnership for Honest Medicine.

“5. The NIH must regulate risky research that has the possibility of causing a pandemic.”

This is a very big concern, and one that is very well outlined in the book The Coming Wave. https://www.gatesnotes.com/The-Coming-WaveThis last risk—of empowering bad actors—is what leads to the biggest challenge of our time: containment. How do we limit the dangers of these technologies while harnessing their benefits? This is the question at the heart of <em style=”font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>The Coming Wave, because containment is foundational to everything else. Without it, the risks of AI and biotechnology become even more acute. By solving for it first, we create the stability and trust needed to tackle everything else.

A point made in the book is that already, anyone today can purchase a DNA printer for use at home. https://americanlaboratorytrading.com/lab-equipment-products/synthetic-genomics-bioxp-3200-automated-personal-genomic-workstation-19348/The <strong style=”font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>Synthetic Genomics BioXp 3200 Automated Personal Genomic Workstation is a<strong style=”font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”> DNA printer – capable of creating genes, genetic elements and molecular tools on a benchtop hands-free, starting with electronically transmitted sequence data.

The bottom line is there is a very real risk and need right now for his final point – regulating risky research.
