Do You Celebrate the Small Wins

We’re in the middle of a simple home renovation, moving the kitchen.

And if you’ve ever done one, you’ll know the bit they never show you online.

First, you rip out the old kitchen and everything looks like chaos.

You’re cooking around boxes, washing dishes in the bathroom, wondering why you ever started.

Then the new kitchen goes in and you think, Wonderful… we’re done!

    Except… you’re not.

There’s still dust everywhere. Paint to touch up. Materials to get rid of. Little fixes you didn’t plan for. It takes time, effort, and patience, and it rarely goes exactly to plan.

Online renovations make it look quick and tidy. Real change never is.

Jenna makes a similar point in her latest Substack : progress (looking at all the recent health wins) is often messy, imperfect, and frustrating …but that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. Small shifts still matter because they mean something is actually moving.

Question for you : Do you make an effort to celebrate small wins?

To answer you question: you betcha! Victory often is the accumulation of small wins. Celebrating them (within reason) can help you keep going; keeping a positive mindset to finish the job.

So true, and I think we sometimes forget to look back and see how far we have come when change is happening.

This is a topic that needed to be raised. I absolutely agree that we have to celebrate the advancements, the small wins (of which there have been a considerable number in the last year). I have read the comments of prominent people on “our side” who, while I still appreciate their contributions and considerable talents, have dropped down on my list of people I rely upon for insightful observations of what is happening on the current journey because they have made it their business to criticize the changes and advancements made in the guise of what I’d call a “left-handed compliment” and because they seem to lack the ability to consider nuance, complexity and context in their assessments. It’s frustrating to read them. I’m happy to concede that vaccines ARE a huge issue but observing that anything else being done is misplaced effort, just not that important and a misalignment of priorities seems like an intractable, bullheaded position. Give me a break. I don’t know if this is out of naivete about how things work in the government or is a certain arrogance about one’s own knowledge and experience. In any case, I’d love to see more balanced observations when these people opine.
