Do “Silver” Mercury Fillings Damage Your Body?
In a recent webinar Dr. Hibberd was kind enough to look at all the questions asked and spend time giving answers, so I will share a few a week.
Question: do “silver” mercury fillings damage your body?
Answer: Mercury containing fillings have always been known to be toxic to the body.
Amalgam is a mixture of metals; 45-55% liquid elemental mercury and a powdered alloy containing silver, tin and copper. The mercury, referred to as “quickSilver” is a known neurotoxin.
Amalgams continuously release mercury vapor in the mouth from amalgam fillings, being inhaled and absorbed across the lungs into the bloodstream. This is the primary human pathway of concern, raising body mercury levels to a measurable degree. Mercury in any form is a known neurotoxin and can particularly affect the kidneys.
The highest release of mercury happens during placement and removal of amalgam, also mecury release happens during chewing & grinding. Think about this, yes, that’s pretty much all the time.
A portion crosses the blood/brain barrier and the placenta. It tends to accumulate inside the cells. Data shows correlation between amalgam surfaces and mercury content in the brain and kidney tissue.
Dental use of amalgam fillings contributes to environmental mercury pollution, via wastewater and solid waste-mercury. Did you know that cremation of bodies with amalgams releases mercury to the air?
Concern centers around, not only environmental loading but on any avoidable mercury exposure, especially for developing nervous systems and kidneys.
