How many of us have ever stopped to think about what we’re actually agreeing to when we accept medical treatment.

Dr. Lindley breaks informed consent down into four important parts:

    1. Information: Have you been told about the benefits, risks, alternatives and what happens if you do nothing?

    2. Understanding: Has everything been explained in a way you genuinely understand?

    3. Capacity: Are you able to weigh up the information and make your own decision?

    4. Voluntariness: Are you making that decision freely, without pressure?

But there’s a fifth point that I think is particularly important.

    5. The right to say NO.

As Dr Lindley puts it, if you can only say yes, you’re not really consenting. You’re complying.
