Are We All Becoming a Little Less Obedient?

Are We All Becoming a Little Less Obedient?
I was at a gathering yesterday, and yet again someone was telling me how much they’ve lost trust in the medical system.
It’s a conversation I seem to be having more and more often.
And I think Dr Joseph Varon makes some interesting points about why so many people feel this way in his latest article, Why the Healers Had to Rebel.
He raises questions about how medicine got here:
Hospitals and bureaucracy: Have rules, targets and paperwork started getting in the way of doctors simply doing what’s best for their patients?
Science and independence: What happens when funding, institutional pressure and fear of challenging accepted thinking influence which questions get asked?
COVID and trust: For many people, 2020 was a turning point. Decisions that once went unquestioned suddenly came under scrutiny, and trust was badly shaken.
Doctors speaking out: I see videos almost every day from doctors who say they once followed every guideline without question, but whose experiences during COVID changed the way they practise medicine.
❤️ A different future: Dr Varon describes a growing movement towards independent medicine, where doctors can question, patients are heard and decisions are made together.
He also writes about “Unlearning Obedience”
I’ve noticed this goes far beyond medicine. In all walks of life, I seem to meet more people who are questioning things they would once have accepted without a second thought.
And I wonder whether something has fundamentally changed in us.
