In his Substack, Dr Paul Marik discusses muscle loss during cancer treatment and how it can have a significant impact on strength, recovery and how well patients tolerate treatment.

He tackles a question many of his subscribers have been asking:

Can protein, whey, leucine and creatine help preserve muscle, or could they potentially encourage tumour growth?

Dr Marik explores what the evidence tells us, why maintaining muscle matters, and how nutrition, resistance training and certain supplements may help.

đź’¬ Has anyone experienced muscle loss during cancer treatment, either personally or through someone close to them? What advice were you given about maintaining strength?

My husband is currently suffering from biphasic (80% sarcomatoid) mesothelioma. He has had a 30lb loss of weight, much of it muscle. It was difficult for him to lift weights (5lb) because of low energy, loss of appetite and change in his ability to taste. He is currently , almost forcing himself to eat, has gained back about 5lbs. He is also trying to do light activity around the house. The loss of muscle mass was quick, within a few weeks. This is all the more complicated by his hemoglobin dropping 4 grams. We are trying to keep to a keto diet but sometimes he just needs calories to maintain. I am very concerned about feeding the cancer so input is greatly appreciated.

I’m so sorry to hear what your husband is going through. It must be incredibly difficult watching him lose so much weight and muscle in such a short time, especially when he’s struggling with his appetite, energy and sense of taste.

I am glad to read he’s managed to regain a little weight and is trying to stay active, even in small ways.

I hope Dr Marik’s article provides some useful information and that others who have faced similar challenges can share their experiences too.

Please keep us updated on his progress.
