🧬Moderna’s mRna Flu Shot: What Did The Data Show?
5,017 vaccinations to prevent one flu hospitalization?
That was one of the numbers unpacked in this week’s IMA webinar examining Moderna’s new mRNA flu vaccine, mFLUSIVA.
Dr. Joseph Varon was joined by Dr. Peter McCullough, Nicolas Hulscher and Dr. John Catanzaro to discuss their reanalysis of the FDA clinical trial data.
Here are some of the numbers they highlighted:
5,017 people would need to receive mFLUSIVA instead of the comparator flu shot to prevent one hospitalization.
1,003 would need to receive it to prevent one ER, urgent-care or hospital visit.
75.7% of mRNA-shot recipients in the detailed safety group reported at least one reaction, compared with 46.7% receiving the standard flu shot.
5.5% experienced Grade 3 reactions severe enough to prevent normal daily activity, compared with 0.9% in the comparator group.
Across the two trials, there were 23 deaths recorded as “unspecified cause” in mRNA recipients versus 9 in the comparator groups. The authors note that this does not establish that the vaccine caused those deaths.
There is a lot more behind these numbers, including what the trial did and didn’t measure, how the authors calculated absolute benefit and risk, and the questions they believe remain unanswered.
