Tick Boxes Over People: Are Care Home Residents Truly Protected?
Six years on, and still no real accountability for what happened in care homes across the world.
For many, it feels like those decisions have simply been brushed aside, and worse, that the lack of accountability has created a quiet arrogance. Almost as if what happened was somehow justified.
In the UK, we saw patients placed on end-of-life pathways, often without families present, without proper advocacy, and in many cases, without ever being seen again by their loved ones.
That brings me to something I heard today that really stayed with me.
One of the UK’s top statisticians — someone widely respected for his work during COVID — shared a personal story on a podcast. His wife, who has early-onset dementia, has been in a care home for the past year. He visits her every single day and holds power of attorney.
Importantly, he had already made his wishes crystal clear:
No medical interventions without his explicit consent.
No vaccinations, especially flu or COVID.
Yet during one of his routine visits, staff approached him with a form to sign. A doctor was coming in to administer flu and COVID jabs to all residents.
He explained he had already declined this.
Their response?
He needed to sign a new form.
The form itself, he said, was poorly put together, almost incomprehensible (see attached image) Likely a mistake, perhaps downloaded incorrectly. But still, it represented the Health System in the UK, and was being handed out for signatures.
He signed, but here’s the part that should concern all of us:
He knows many residents never receive visits from family. No one is there daily to advocate for them. No one to question, to challenge, to refuse.
And he is convinced that if he hadn’t been there that day, his wife would have been given those injections regardless of his prior instructions.
So it raises serious questions:
How often are prior wishes being overlooked or bypassed?
How many residents have no one there to speak for them?
Are care homes and medical staff simply following protocols without question?
Where does consent truly stand in these environments?
Regardless of where you stand on vaccines or medical policy, this is about something more fundamental:
Advocacy. Consent. Accountability.
If you have a loved one in a care home:
How do you ensure their wishes are respected?
What safeguards have you put in place?
Have you ever encountered something similar?
And for those who don’t have someone visiting daily…
Who is protecting them?
