Ivermectin for IBS?

I’m looking for information on the validity of using Ivermectin for IBS. I saw something recently that mentioned it’s effectiveness. If so, what would the dosage be? 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mg/kg or higher and how often? Thanks!

    Hi tiffanym<div>

This is a interesting question, and a possible IBS treatment that would not surprise me, with all we’re learning about ivermectin.

Are you thinking of something you read that might have suggested ivermectin taken long term, or more for a relatively short period of time?

    Best,

Maybe a short-term intensive regimen of IVM to help with the acute stage she is in now? I’m not sure.

I found this to be an interesting related article:

Sorry to stray from Ivermectin but just to throw in I am currently working through a ‘high dose sulfur protocol’ from Kathleen Janel (Naturopath). As far as gas and bloating symptoms she indicated 80-85% of her clients resolve their issues from her 20 years of experience. Too early for me to tell. https://www.thesibodoctor.com/2024/01/26/high-dose-sulfur-ibs-kathleen-janel/

    Hi tiffanym

Ivermectin could be a very interesting option to explore, especially when considered in a wider protocol. However, its important to note that IBS is a collection of symptoms due to some imbalances which could span across the whole GI system and not really a diagnosis on its own. So then I would always recommend to find out what maybe driving these symptoms for you specifically. Is it overgrowth, it is potentially pathogenic bacteria, is it parasite (and I’ll add that not all actually warren’t treatment in this case), is it intestinal permeability (leaky gut) is it low stomach acid, is it SIBO or is it inflammation, is it stress- so many things to consider. I’m a naturopath so I always question and search for the root causes/drivers before plastering on a named treatment because treatments only go so far, we want to heal so its sustained longterm. Maybe a full gi map stool test could be a good first step if you haven’t done this already and then you are more informed with how best to use Ivermectin- if at all in your case. Best of luck.

Thank you everyone for your input. So far we have ruled out SIBO, H Pylori, UC, Crohns, Celiac, parasites. She does have an increased Fecal Calprotectin of 265. She has had 2 endoscopies and colonoscopies. She is only 19 and healthy, exercises every day, very active. Waiting on a few more biopsies they obtained during the endoscopy a few days ago. Enteritis? But all of the scope pics looked good. She has a history of an eating disorder that she has mostly recovered from. She gets the calories in but everything goes right through her or she gets constipated.

Haven’t done the GI mapp yet. Her doc wanted her to wait on that to see if there was something more going on, ruling out the main things… crohns, celiac,uc.

    Any other thoughts?

      Hi tiffanym

With a history of ED I’d look at zinc/copper balance as this often gets displaced. Zinc in particular is massively supportive in the gut. I’d also be very cautious around restrictive diets in this case. Is she on hormonal birth control by any chance? I loved the recommendation in the thread of soaked Chia seeds, but if that’s not possible then a PHGG (sunfiber) (I like the product by tomorrow’s nutrition) is a super non fermentable fiber that can easily be mixed into hot/cold drinks- very user friendly. I’d also look at saccharomyces boulardii for 8-12 weeks to see if this can help along with the PHGG to modify the microbial balance. Also perhaps straight butyrate could we supportive too. Hope that helps!

Thanks for posting this discussion. I am also curious about an anti parasitic protocol for my 14yr old daughter. She has mild IBS and a progressing liver disease(PSC) which presented post vaccination. Rampant inflammation symptoms (joints, occasional hives).

Considering the timeline I’m very curious about Covid and/or Vax as possible trigger.

I’m so sorry to read this about your sweet daughter. I would be cautious doing anti-parasitic cleanses with liver issues. The antimicrobials can be very strong and may be contraindicated for her. But…. have you ruled out gut dysbiosis as there is often an autoimmune component to PSC and in some cased a link to IBD? Definitely look at gut support and gentle liver support (milk thistle dandelion, artichoke extract, NAC, glutathione etc (if not on meds that may contraindicate, of course). Address nutrient deficiencies particularly fat soluble vitamins as these could be effected in PSC. Anti-inflammatory diet really rich in polyphenols, hydration, gentle but consistent movement and sleep. Wishing you all the best.

    Hi Tiffany,
A lot of people with IBS have found the following helpful:
    1) avoid foods that you know cause you problems (e.g. common ones are wheat, dairy)
    2) consider probiotics capsule or making and consuming sauerkraut daily
    3) digestive enzymes with main meal, and if no issues, with each meal
    4) fluids between meals
    5) VitD

For regular bowel movements, 1tsp-1tbsp soaked chia seed in glass of water daily, allow it to gel for 10mins, stir then consume.

    All the best.

My brother has bad IBS as a young man as well. Here is what we’ve been doing, and he says it has had notable impact.

    1. Probiotics
    2. Flavonoids (quercetin is one, but we have a combo that we take)
    3. Berberine
    4. Something fermented (kombucha, sauerkraut, etc)

We do take Vit-D daily, especially in winter.

We also cook from scratch mostly and avoid heavily processed foods, as much as we can (it feels impossible sometimes!)

I too have heard that Ivermectin could be used for IBS. One dose of IVM is 0.2 mg IVM per KG of body weight. I generally take 3 to 4 doses of IVM per week to control my Long Vax symptoms.

At around 15 doses of IVM per week, side effects such as wavy vision or confusion could appear.

I suspect IVM was an ancient gut symbiotic molecule for small ground tunneling mammals. A reformed NIH no longer concerned with acquiring patents could be directed to look at symbiotic bacteria and molecules.
