IMA Applauds RFK for Ending “Backdoor” Vaccine Mandate for Medical Staff.

Huge news. IMA applauds RFK for ending hospital vaccine mandates tied to federal funding—but universities and academic centers are still playing by those rules.

Today IMA is applauding HHS Secretary Kennedy and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz for officially getting rid of a controversial rule that basically forced hospitals to make COVID-19 shots mandatory for all healthcare workers, thanks to federal funding pressure. In Dr. Joseph Varon’s own words:
“It’s time to end the unlawful coercion of medical and university personnel through these backdoor COVID shot mandates. The prior policy created a perverse financial incentive for hospitals to mandate staff vaccination, regardless of individual health conditions, personal choice, or evolving science. That’s not public health—that’s regulatory coercion. This is a major victory for medical freedom.” 🏥
But we’re also calling out universities, academic research hospitals, and big clinic systems for keeping similar incentive rules alive. According to Dr. Varon, “this financial arm-twisting is still happening,” pointing out that the Department of Education and the NIH are still rewarding institutions that show “strong vaccination compliance” by granting big research money—often using CDC-style staff mandates as the key metric. 💸
“Whether through CMS, NIH, or even private insurers copying the federal playbook, medical professionals are being forced to choose between their jobs and their judgment. That’s unethical. It must end.” ⚖️
So what do you all think? Is this truly a victory for “medical freedom,” or will those old incentive structures keep the same pressure in new places? Should other federally funded centers—like universities and research hospitals—face even more scrutiny now? Are we finally moving away from “backdoor mandates,” or just shifting the goalposts?
