I have longstanding cardiovascular disease, a leaky valve, minor heart damage from a heart attack in ’08 and a slightly enlarged (but stable) aorta. Last week, I experienced three days of irregular heartbeat and so headed to hospital, where I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. However, my BPM was just 90 and my Troponin was only slightly elevated. I am 68yo, 175cm, 84kg male.

I was discharged same day with instructions to doubly my Atenolol to 50mg and to commence a twice-daily 20mg blood thinner (Xarelto). I was also advised to stop my low dose Aspirin and 110mg K2.

I am concerned about stopping the K2 as I take it alongside 5000iu D3. I have definitely benefited from the D3 in at least one way: my psoriasis has pretty much disappeared. I want to continue the D3 for that reason, but also for the other benefits it offers but, as far as I know, it would be unwise to continue the D3 without the K2.

The episode of AFIB passed later that evening and I have not so far commenced the blood thinner. However, my SpO2 is now a little lower than it used to be at 94/95%, perhaps indicating that I have suffered a little more heart damage. I will see my cardiologist next week. He instructed me to get a echocardiogram performed first, which I had yesterday.

Note that I have been under enormous stress for more than a year and a half now, due to my wife having advanced ovarian cancer. I believe the AFIB was triggered by this.

If I must go on a blood thinner, is it so imperative that I stop the K2? If so, is there any alternative that would allow me to continue the D3?

Vitamin K2 does come with a slight increased risk of blood clot. I think your doctor wanted to play it safe.

The real question is why your blood vessel and heart getting damaged. The usual causes are excessive carb intake, and eating deep fried food.

I am not any kind of medical practitioner; I learned what I know the hard way, i.e. personal experience. I’d avoid blood thinners and take natural Vit. E (thins blood), boost the D & K, research dietary changes and find an Integrative Functional Medicine (IFM) doctor. My reason? My dog was on an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, like aspirin, etc.) Metacam/meloxicam for two weeks. It completely destroyed his health, he was passing blood front & rear within two weeks, affected his smooth muscles, eg. throat, lungs, you name it. I had no idea and the vet said he had cancer. Dog refused the drug and I finally listened to my dog. Went to an old herbal book, followed directions, and he got better, lasted an other year. It was hell to watch. Years earlier, my GP put me on Vioxx for fibromyalgia; I had a bad feeling about it, took about 3 doses and quit. It was taken off the market shortly afterwards for causing heart attacks. It was an IFM MD (now retired) who diagnosed heavy metal poisoning from an exterminator using mercuric chloride to kill carpenter ants in my home that was causing my problems. Depressing? I know. But it’s a start. Good Luck to you and your wife.

My husband has arrhythmia and tachycardia when he takes K-2 w/calcium and vit. D. He is unable to tolerate the symptoms, fortunetly they resolve within 24 hours.

Turmeric is a mild blood thinner with a myriad of beneficial properties. It might be worth looking up?
