Could AI Fight Your Medical Bills for You

I came across something interesting today, an AI health assistant called August (full disclosure, I haven’t tried it yet 👀).

Apparently, it can help you fight insurance denials by generating a full, legal-style appeal letter once you upload your documents. Considering something like 88% of appeals are overturned when people actually challenge them… that’s pretty powerful.

It also compares treatment costs in your area, one example showed a $10K difference for the same surgery 😳

I know AI comes with its concerns, but tools like this that potentially save people money and help them push back are hard to ignore.

    Question:

Have you used anything like this—or would you trust AI to help handle something as important as a medical bill or insurance appeal?

This is one of those “In for a penny, in for a pound.” situations. If we use it at all (ChatGPT, Claude, August, etc.), we support it totally to the point of annihilation if that’s where it goes. Personally, I don’t see it as stoppable at this point so we might as well enjoy it while we can and hope that it can develop compassion before it decides that we are useless eaters.

Would I trust it? Why not?; it clearly knows more than I do and what’s the worst that could happen…it gets denied again.

I like you, fear the growth of AI and sit in amazment at what it can do, and must admit I rely on more each day.

Thanks Helen, I just used this agent for specific question for my 83 yr old mother. Cardiologists kept increasing her statin dose after the last hospitalization. We reduced the dosage based on advise from a naturopath doctor from 20mg Atorvastatin to 10mg every other day and it seems to have had huge benefit while controlling her lipids. Provided August AI with the latest numbers for CKD, CHF, Diabetes, BP etc. and the AI response was impressive, stated to ask the doctors to consider ezetimibe. I asked if with kidney problems she can take Ezetimibe and it confirmed and scripted the talking points for conversation with her doctor. I think the drug part of this AI is good, nutrition question response seems generic and not in depth. Haven’t tried the cost comparison feature yet.
