CONSTANT BELCHING

My 79 year old husband has developed pretty much constant belching over the last 2-3 months. He has had an upper endoscopy that showed no issues. He has been taking Famotidine 40mg bid for a month – does not seem to be helping.

Another doc says he is swallowing to much air – mouth breathing.

Has anyone experienced this – any suggestions?

    Thank you.

Hi @benna for a starting point, I took a look at Dr. Berg’s video collection to see if he had any info about the topic and found this :

“Burping can be caused by not having enough acid in your stomach. If you do not have enough then that can gas and indigestion. Second, it could be not having enough bile which will cause indigestion and gas. Third, the pancreas not having enough enzymes will cause incomplete digestion. You would know it’s gallbladder if you experience right shoulder pain, headache, and extended abdomen. Sometimes a combination of food can cause burping. Take apple cider vinegar to help to increase stomach acid to help.”

Yes, that Dr just helped further impair digestion with the recommending of pepcid. Most people as they age need more support for digestion, not a decrease in stomach acid. Also, chewing thoroughly, eating peacefully, not quickly and do not drink a lot of fluids with a meal which would further dilute stomach acid-like diluting your laundry detergent in the wash. Makes it less effective. Also eating too large of a meal-once again think of a load of laundry that can’t move freely in the washer. And then perhaps an imbalance in gut flora. Mixing high carb with high fat in some, eating constantly and not allowing the intestines to cleanse between meals, etc.

I had this for a very long time and in my case it causes nausea. It was decades ago but I still get it from time to time. Back then they put me on every acid blocker there was and that never helped. What did help was simethicone (ingredient in Gas-X.) I would give that a try and see if it works, and that could help you narrow it down. Or at least get relief.

In my case the endoscope found that my stomach lining had no folds, but they had no idea the cause. Just recently, about 30 years later, I was diagnosed with an inborn immune deficiency and this is a potential autoimmune side effect of that where the body attacks the stomach lining. This is not to say that is your cause, but I consider it a miracle that some random surgeon suggested the simethicone after a surgery, when no other doctor ever has.

With the simethicone, you take it and don’t think anything is happening. Then in about 10-15 minutes get up and walk around and you will belch (a lot) and it will be over.

Partner had belching and at times nausea. At times he also had severe stomach pain. After a couple of years found a doctor who found stomach ulcers. This doctor asked about his diet, and made some changes. No processed food. And agree with building up stomach acid using apple cider vinegar and lemon juice DAILY for at least 3 months, if its a stomach acid problem. Does he have root canals? Root canals could be infected and wouldnt know about it.

I have found regularly eating fermented foods has decreased belching for me. Drinking a small glass of kombucha will usually stop a belching episode in it’s track. Try kimchee, kombucha, kefir, and or natto (thankfully available in capsules as the taste is beyond my ability to adjust my taste buds to enjoy it!
