This episode of ‘Kid’s Corner with Dr. Liz’ kicks off a series on feeding your baby. Here, pediatrician and IMA Senior Fellow Dr. Elizabeth Mumper answers a question many parents have questions about: How do you know when your baby is ready for solid foods?
Dr. Mumper shares some important clues:
- Your baby becomes excited when watching you eat, and may try to reach for your food.
- Your baby can sit upright and hold their head steady while in a high chair.
- Your baby can hold objects in their hand and bring them to their mouth independently.
- The tongue-thrust reflex, which pushes food out of the mouth, typically fades around 4 months of age. Before this time, babies often push a spoon out with their tongue. When this reflex stops, babies are usually more ready for solid foods.
Most babies are ready to begin eating solid foods sometime between 4 and 6 months of age.
